Weekly Women Wednesday Vol. LXIII - Kate Davis
The feeling of the neck of my guitar vibrating with sound into my palm is the same feeling of overwhelming comfort that I find in Kate Davis’ music. Even though her record ‘Trophy’ is a new find of mine, it feels like these songs have always been with me. Breakout track ‘rbbts’ has found it’s way onto all of my reckoning playlists, nestled under my ribs for when my chest grows sore from all it’s longing. I can’t help but hear the lyrics as an open letter to myself, sent from an empowered yet raw, fragile version of myself and addressed to this current jaded and guarded heart of mine. The chorus rolls into your ears in a crooning, mantra-like manner, ‘What are you afraid of, why do you hide?’. I’ve asked myself these very questions each time I’m faced with my own reflection in the mirror, searching every inch of my face for an ounce of softness. What starts as a soft and aching ballad turns into an explosive symphony of hoarse guitar and drums that serve as a reminder that the best way to feel is to feel wholly and loudly. Davis has roots planted in jazz and soul, and these influences glimmer through in her new indie rock sound, bringing a silvery and fresh depth to the genre. This entire record feels like such an introspective confessional, Davis laying her heart out on the table is an act of boundless vulnerability. Creating a piece of art that has become my guide in my fight for the chance to be soft again.
