Weekly Women Wednesday Vol. LXIV - Nasty Cherry

Last week I cut my hair far above my shoulders while sitting in my room dimly lit by a singular salt lamp, and nothing could have soundtracked this bought of emotion and catharsis like newest EP ‘Season 1’ from Nasty Cherry. There’s something so sacred about the moment of clarity that washes over you when you hear a song that somehow sums up the exact situation you have felt so stuck in. You can sit in one emotion or feeling just not knowing what to do with yourself or where to go next then you hear one lyric or a chord that strikes you right in your ribs, and it’s like you can finally breathe for the first time in weeks. Which is exactly how I would recount my first time hearing ‘Win’. I stumbled upon the track as I was literally sat in bed, deciding I was just going to sit here for the rest of time and wallow, and by the time the chorus hit I felt that burning in my chest calling me back to center and screaming at me to get off my ass. The track opens with a grungy guitar riff that’ll sit beneath the assertive vocals from Gabriette Bechtel and the big, punchy synthesized percussion. This steadfast verse makes a quick turn into the roaring yet simplistic and 80’s-centric chorus, ‘I need to win’. A caveat to remember that you’ve made it this far, there’s no point in taking a loss now. Nasty Cherry was formed in the public eye on Netflix series I’m With the Band, and these interesting roots have drawn in criticisms that could often lead to artists becoming jaded or apathetic, but this music is nothing less than wholly authentic. You can tell that they live and breathe their work, reeling in -isms everywhere from the UK punk-rock scene to lighter alt-pop sounds. Everything about these women and their craft feels so fresh and exciting, they are what keeps music fun for me, knowing no boundary and leaving no sound unturned.
