Melina Duterte, better known as Jay Som, is a California native singer-songwriter that I never knew I needed. Her latest release in August 2019, Anak Ko, brings a majestic collection of songs filled with dreamy vocals and moody basslines that are addictive. The song 'Peace Out' was a major favorite of mine, the energy and frustration in Duterte's vocals brings a beautiful darkness that I feel is generally hard to find in this genre. Duterte's 2017 breakout track, 'Baybee', from her second album Everybody Works is also one that caught my attention. There's a groove and rhythm in Baybee that makes it impossible to sit still while listening. These tracks create a safe and intimate space; a softness that reminds me of the first day of spring. Your skin feeling the warmth for the first time, the sunlight hugging your body. The sun finally coming out when it felt like the air was going to be frigid forever. There is a kindness in Duterte’s voice that fills your heart like no other.

Be sure to keep up with Jay Som on Instagram & Twitter, and to listen on Spotify & Apple Music.
