Weekly Women Wednesday Vol. LXI - Litany
I have always used music as a form of escapism, but never before have I wanted to live inside a discography like Litany’s. With the release of her latest EP ‘Single Player Mode’, this London based artist has proven to be a glimmering beacon of pop magic, drawing us into her elemental world of neon lit nights and hopeless romanticism. Each of these tracks will transport you into a charming realm of endless nostalgia, graced with starry chimes and eccentric synth samples. This record opens with the bubbly ‘My Dude’, this track is exactly what I would imagine Cher Horowitz dancing to using a hairbrush microphone in a director's cut Clueless montage. You can’t help but become addicted to Litany’s whimsy harmonies and use of seductive brass instruments to accent the funky keys, reminiscent of an early George Michael's classic. I have found myself singing this song in every grocery store aisle and terrorizing my neighbors as I belt along in the shower, feeling like i'm back in high school going after an unruly crush who is definitely out of my league but also so totally made for me. This record is Litany’s first step into a solo career, and I am nothing less than dumbfounded by this new and unparalleled sound for herself. The EP is closed out by it’s roaring and heart wrenching title track, ‘Single Player Mode’. I never thought I would hear a ballad like this come out of this millennium, leaving me teary eyed every time just like all of my life long favorites from Bowie or Patti Smith. The kind of loss and heartbreak that leaves you stuck in the rain for what feels like an eternity, having to relearn the things that you thought were concrete. Kicking and and fighting the whole way to this new version of yourself, getting to know what a life is like without them.
