Weekly Women Wednesday Vol. LXII - Stef Chura
Stef Chura writes the music that lights a fire in my very core, she sings with such an enamoring grit, harnessing that moxie of the 90’s alt-rock that my mom would blare in her old Honda accord. These punchy guitar riffs and clamoring drums have become sort of quintessential to the Stef Chura sound, always accenting and deepening her her silvery timbre. Throughout her first two LP’s she used this shouty tone and roaring instrumentals as an act of catharsis, coming completely unhinged in a fit of release. Crashing down like a clap of thunder or a wave slamming into the shore when the tide grows high, overflowing, expelling all that ache and anger into the sand. Her latest album ‘Midnight’ has become a go-to record whenever I have some lingering angst that I need to shake off, thrashing and dancing around in my room with my speakers at full volume, because I don’t think my neighbors could hate me more than I already do. Screaming along until my throat is raw, serving as a reminder that I can and will be heard. Lead single ‘Method Man’ holds all of that ire and wrath that we–women especially–are taught to bottle up and tie up with a bow. Mid-way through the song there's a switch in tempo that sets my heart aflame as Chura hollers an all too familiar recount of a man so condescending that it’s almost poetic. I just find an overwhelming comfort in this maudlin style writing delivered in a way that is sonically just as loud and consuming as your thoughts can be, and solace in how she is able to become untethered as she puts pen to paper.
