Weekly Women Wednesday Vol. LXVI - Jensen McRae
Jensen McRae is baring her heart and soul in her song writing, telling the heavy stories most women carry. The ones that go unspoken yet linger under your ribs and bite at your ankles for years to come, it’s that hard to swallow type of raw emotion. McRae has a voice that will weigh heavy on you as you sink into her gravelly timbre, reminiscent of all the greats of jazz and swing, the records my grandmother would spin on Sunday mornings. New track from Jensen ‘Wolves’ feels like one of those songs I’ve been waiting for my whole life, a recount of the torment and even assault that we all fear and many have lived. Her words are dense, yet float effortlessly among the airy acoustic guitar and folk aura, a silvery and symbolic juxtaposition. ‘Wolves’ follows a timeline starting with that blissful oblivion you live in when you’re 15, eyes are bright with that steadfast mentality racing to grow up. It only takes one moment of that plunging fear to change you, taking away everything you thought you knew about living. It's that kind of fear that raises your temperature, there's a ringing in your ears and you clench your fists knowing defending yourself could only make it worse. ‘I never walked the same’ is the line that forms a pit in my stomach at each listen, it’s a strange mix of comfort and disdain because as much as I wish the story never had to be written, I can’t help but feel held by her words. Longing for the days when you could leave the house without building up that fortress to stay obscured, before you carried that burden of not wanting to draw those stares that burn right through you. Jensen McRae is making the music that everyone needs to be listening to, her writing will force you into a path of empathy and warmth, washing over you like a silken hand on your cheek.
