Weekly Women Wednesday Vol. LXIX - E^ST
I have had trouble finding comfort in anything recently, unable to settle into my feelings or feel at ease in my own skin. One thing I have found solace in is music, specifically the songs that make me feel better about being so weary of love, this is where ‘FRESH OUT OF LOVE’ by E^st came into play. This track feels like a hazy dream sequence from a grayscale 50’s film, starring the jaded cynic (me) and the hopeless romantic counterpart (also me). Melisa Bester—the mind behind E^st—has this throaty timbre and classic swing style that she brings into her music, these pieces of the past working hand in hand with modern pop and indie elements. While her genre knows no boundaries as she experiments with everything from funky synth to somber ballads, what remains unchanging is her ability to display such raw emotion in her lyricism. As I mentioned earlier her recent release ‘FRESH OUT OF LOVE’ has played a big part through my current bemusement about love. I’ve spent all my teenage years writing about love songs and buried in romance novels, thinking even the tragic ones were just as stunning as the type of love that seemed to come so easily. Spoiler alert no love is easy. This song feels scarily reminiscent of all my recent journal entries and late night word-vomit into my notes app, confessions of giving too much of yourself to someone you thought could never hurt you. It really only takes a breakup or two to end up feeling like your heart is absolutely barren, leaving you with nothing left to give. What takes longer is coming to the realization that sometimes you just have to sit in that heartbreak, letting yourself feel that anger and confusion, forgiving yourself for your naiveties. Hearing these words from E^st feels like a soft hand on your shoulder, reminding you that your strife isn’t some uncharted territory no one has endured, and that the art of letting go starts with accepting your pain as it lay.
