Weekly Women Wednesday Vol. LXXI - Julianna Zachariou

Julianna Zachariou recently released her EP ‘rope swing’, and it feels sunshine seeping in through the window after a long rain. Julianna balances feather light acoustics with lyrics that bare brute truths in a way that really makes you feel that confusing ebb and flow of being a 20-something. Lead single ‘avoiding’ hits me to my core every damn time, it’s that phenomenon of being so painfully self aware and knowing you should be over someone, but they’re still that habit you just can’t kick. Telling yourself you’re over it, and really truly believing it, til you hear someone laugh and it sounds just like theirs and it cuts you right between your ribs. As much as I tell myself there is no timeline to healing (which is true), I still check my calendar and count the days since we ended to see how they stack up and tower over the days since I last cried about it and roll my eyes and curse my heart for being so stubborn. As galling as this whirlwind of emotion is, this song along still feels like my favorite Sunday mornings. Warm tea and honey on the porch, dancing around my room basking in the new-ness of the week, feeling brand new. Zachariou has mastered this silvery sort of feeling in her work, using playful hand claps to accent her warm and airy timbre and a sea of friendly guitar. I feel like I’ve been chasing down sunlight for weeks now, digging through old photos and vinyl to try and find a taste of familiarity, and I feel like this EP is exactly what I’ve been looking for. So if you need me, I’ll be in the car with my mom on a drive with no destination, blaring ‘church st.’ until the sun goes down. If you're looking to let some light in, I suggest you do the same.
